Tl;dr - Post music that inspires you to write!
We're all creative beings here. We have to be, otherwise we wouldn't be here in the first place.
I find a lot of the time that music provides a great deal of inspiration for me, contributing quite heavily to thread ideas, settings and even character design. This doesn't always mean that listening to music as I actively write will provide inspiration (though it often will!), rather any kind of music that strikes me in such a way, heard at any point, can instil inspiration within me that I would synthesise at a later time.
So! Are any of you the same? Do you ever come across pieces of music that inspire you so deeply that you feel you need to build something from it? I'd love to hear what speaks to some of you.
Here is a little list of things that I adore and that offer me so much inspiration, especially for SWRPG.
Woob / Max & Harvey - Space Therapy
Woob is masterful when it comes to the atmospheric. He is a spectacular composer and can really instil some inspiring energy. A lot of his music is quite blatantly inspired by and subsequently very reminiscent of classic space operas of the 70s, yet can also achieve the heights of refined and intense orchestral scoring that we hear today in films, as wonderfully displayed in 'Space Therapy'. There is something so very mysterious about his sound.
Gustav Holst's The Planets Suite
I'm sure many know this piece already, but The Planets' dynamic and emotional rampage through the solar system is enticing and sublime. There is too much to go into with this one!
Martin Stig Andersen - Menu (LIMBO Soundtrack)
Andersen is a spectacular sound artist. Many of his pieces consist of ambience and texture. Overall, his work is so very atmospheric and beautiful.
Michiru Oshima & Pentagon - Heal (ICO Soundtrack)
Michiru Oshima - Brothers (Fullmetal Alchemy Soundtrack)
I don't know much about Pentagon, but Michiru Oshima is a composer of many game, film and anime soundtracks. She has a lovely sound that I am only just starting to become familiar with, yet 'Heal' is a short piece I have been acquainted with for a very long time. There is something about this piece that is so magical and warming, perhaps innocent and naive in its own humble way.
Plaid - White Dream
This piece always strikes me silent when I hear it. Though it is the soundtrack to the film Tekkonkinkreet, it can certainly be enjoyed on its own. The immersion of this track is simply incredible. When I was writing some of Remus' more serious storylines in the last couple years, this piece offered stunning inspiration for the resolution and respite for his suffering.
Rika Muranaka - The Best Is Yet To Come (Metal Gear Solid Soundtrack)
I probably shouldn't post this one as there are far too many connections with the game for me (vigorously emotional connections at that), but it is a stunning track regardless. It has that wonderfully 'earthy' quality to it that only makes me want to travel more, and write more travel-oriented things.
Dreissk - Emergence
Dreissk - Depart
Dreissk has a very special place in my heart. He has so much raw emotion in all of his pieces. Over the years he has very much inspired my attempts to write poignantly.
Juno Reactor - Conga Fury
Ah, now this is what I call a fight track! Speedy, energetic and hard.
And there is so much more out there! I'm interested in hearing some of the things that inspire all of you, but don't feel the need to write over-the-top descriptions of each piece as I have.
Hopefully this thread will take off.
