  • Music To Inspire

Tl;dr - Post music that inspires you to write!

We're all creative beings here. We have to be, otherwise we wouldn't be here in the first place.

I find a lot of the time that music provides a great deal of inspiration for me, contributing quite heavily to thread ideas, settings and even character design. This doesn't always mean that listening to music as I actively write will provide inspiration (though it often will!), rather any kind of music that strikes me in such a way, heard at any point, can instil inspiration within me that I would synthesise at a later time.

So! Are any of you the same? Do you ever come across pieces of music that inspire you so deeply that you feel you need to build something from it? I'd love to hear what speaks to some of you.

Here is a little list of things that I adore and that offer me so much inspiration, especially for SWRPG.

Woob / Max & Harvey - Space Therapy
Woob is masterful when it comes to the atmospheric. He is a spectacular composer and can really instil some inspiring energy. A lot of his music is quite blatantly inspired by and subsequently very reminiscent of classic space operas of the 70s, yet can also achieve the heights of refined and intense orchestral scoring that we hear today in films, as wonderfully displayed in 'Space Therapy'. There is something so very mysterious about his sound.

    Gustav Holst's The Planets Suite
I'm sure many know this piece already, but The Planets' dynamic and emotional rampage through the solar system is enticing and sublime. There is too much to go into with this one!

Martin Stig Andersen - Menu (LIMBO Soundtrack)
Andersen is a spectacular sound artist. Many of his pieces consist of ambience and texture. Overall, his work is so very atmospheric and beautiful.

Michiru Oshima & Pentagon - Heal (ICO Soundtrack)
Michiru Oshima - Brothers (Fullmetal Alchemy Soundtrack)
I don't know much about Pentagon, but Michiru Oshima is a composer of many game, film and anime soundtracks. She has a lovely sound that I am only just starting to become familiar with, yet 'Heal' is a short piece I have been acquainted with for a very long time. There is something about this piece that is so magical and warming, perhaps innocent and naive in its own humble way.

    Plaid - White Dream
This piece always strikes me silent when I hear it. Though it is the soundtrack to the film Tekkonkinkreet, it can certainly be enjoyed on its own. The immersion of this track is simply incredible. When I was writing some of Remus' more serious storylines in the last couple years, this piece offered stunning inspiration for the resolution and respite for his suffering.

Rika Muranaka - The Best Is Yet To Come (Metal Gear Solid Soundtrack)
I probably shouldn't post this one as there are far too many connections with the game for me (vigorously emotional connections at that), but it is a stunning track regardless. It has that wonderfully 'earthy' quality to it that only makes me want to travel more, and write more travel-oriented things.

    Dreissk - Emergence
    Dreissk - Depart
Dreissk has a very special place in my heart. He has so much raw emotion in all of his pieces. Over the years he has very much inspired my attempts to write poignantly.

    Juno Reactor - Conga Fury
Ah, now this is what I call a fight track! Speedy, energetic and hard.

And there is so much more out there! I'm interested in hearing some of the things that inspire all of you, but don't feel the need to write over-the-top descriptions of each piece as I have. Hopefully this thread will take off.

    Wonderful thread idea!

And this is going to make for so much new music to discover!

My music inspiration can be random as well. I'll come back to this thread, but sharing my oldest and strongest inspirations for Tatiana since I started writing her. They are viscerally Tatiana to me.

    Odos Oniron - Nana Mouskouri
Den Itan Nissi - Nana Mouskouri

The versions of the songs are from her first concert back in Greece in 1984 at the Herrod Atticus and are the specific versions I grew up listening to and go back to when writing Tatiana.

Those are great! She has a wonderful voice, and the rhythms in those tracks are excellent! Very, well, Greek Thanks for sharing ^_^

Another piece that I was quite heavily inspired by when I first joined the board as the 'pre-Remus Remus', when I wanted him to be a thoroughly evil, insane psycho dude, was Hans Zimmer's Dream Is Collapsing. It always conjured up dreams of utter Sith annihilation to me, and I was rather proud of a little character video I made with the track. Oh, how different he was back then.

Sins of the Father - Donna Burke (Metal Gear Solid 5 Soundtrack)

Another Metal Gear one. I thought of this song as a theme for Forse right as he's going into combat. The first 2 minutes is representative of how aloof and trapped in his own mind Forse is. Then the music picks up and he has to push all that emotion back. Forse is heading for a nervous breakdown, no doubt.

        Battle Theme

"The Republic," he toasted, turning a few curious heads up and down the bar. "May they choke on vomit and die." - Captain Sin'd Tjer

What a sublime track. Poor Forse. I'm a bit slow on getting to the newer games but I hope to get all caught up before Phantom Pain is released.

          Another for me:
Joe Hisaishi - Princess Mononoke Soundtrack (Symphonic Suite)
Truly stunning. The main motif of this suite invokes so much within me, and I always feel the strong desire to write vivid imagery of vast landscapes, long journeys and self-discovery whenever I hear it.

I have specific songs for specific characters:

Caltin: All American Rejects - Move Along
JT Tyler: Motorhead - The Game
Tauren Saryl: Evanescence - Bring me to Life
Aric: Dean Martin - Kick in the head
Kameron Angellus: Enya - Only in Time
Dak Hobson: Elvis Presley - Blue Moon of Kentucky
Aien Mueller: Jon Bon Jovi - Blaze of Glory (Don't judge! XD)
Ewan Isaacs: Lit - Over my head (Every pilot I have ever written has gone nuts with this)
            Baus - Sum 41 - Fat Lip

There are more, but if I'm ever in a pinch these are my hookups.

You have power over your mind, not outside events.
Realize this and you will find strength.

I'm sorry, Caltin, the JBJJ (Jon Bon Jovi Judging) has already begun. That is a handy thing to have, though, creative pick-me-ups for each character. I will have to experiment with that!

And actually, while we're on the topic of character-oriented inspiration, Yoko Kanno's 'Tank' and 'Space Lion' provide me with fun muse for Teru, but I suppose it's pretty obvious why.

A few things that get my creative juices going...

Mother Maiden / Faster - Within Temptation

Starset's album "Transmissions" is a bit rock mixed with epic movie score... It's been giving me thoughts. "My Demons" - Starset And full album: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Lz0SndnHYeo

Black Veil Bride's album "Wretched and Divine" is basically a story wrapped into a 42 minute musical album... basically telling the story of a war/revolution occurs against a supremest socialist empire. Full album: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vaLaS2cEnzM "In the End" details the end of the war.

My thread "Curse of the Dark Side" was originally written to "Epiphany" by Trans Siberian Orchestra

"Liberi Fatali" - Nobuo Uematsu (Final Fantasy 8 Opening)

As always: Requiem for a Dream's Theme

This is wonderful! Thank you for sharing, everyone. I'm looking forward to hearing these when I get the time.

Nate, Liberi Fatali is a stunning piece, and Nobuo is our lord saviour.

Helios is an artist that gets to me every time, and is amazing inspiration for emotive, melancholy writing, yet there is a mysterious quality to his music as well.

                        Helios - Coast Off
Helios - First Dream Called Ocean
                        Helios - Convivium
                        Helios - Friedel

Because he is so very ethereal in his work as well, I find it very helpful when writing more meditation-strong things.

Things I Write To, As My Various Selves:

The Fountain, OST - Clint Mansell

Cloud Atlas, OST - Composed by Tom Tykwer, Johnny Klimek & Reinhold Heil

Light and Shadow, 1492 OST, Vangelis

Bram Stoker's Dracula, OST Wojciech Kilar

I usually tend toward soundtracks when I'm writing. Not always though, sometimes I just get fixated on a certain song / songs for a character. LOL

Oh, and I have been front row to Bon Jovi. Thank you, very much...
