  • Return to Civilization [Tal]

    Years ago, there was a Knight of the Sith Empire. He was little more than a boy, thrown into the cruel and painful world that he came to call home. He sought power, power to control and kill and be free. His search was not left unrewarded, but such things come at a price. His mind had begun to fail him. Perhaps it was the presence of the Darkside in such a young mind. Perhaps it was the insanity of his master that infected him. Whatever the cause, the end result was the same.

    It wasn't uncommon for the Sith to lose their minds. Indeed, many of the weaker beings who desired the passionate side of the Force broke under the strain. Deimos had known this, had the wit to see what was happening to himself though not the power to stop it. It was for this reason that he had gone searching, scouring the Sith archives for any possible cure. He had found something. No one could say for sure if the young Zabrak had actually found what he was looking for, or if the madness simply convinced him that he had. In either case, he left the temple in search of something.

    Technology had never been his speciality. Indeed, Deimos held a distaste for most advanced things, particularly spaceships. He had spent quite a sum to fix his ship with advanced computers in order to handle the finicky nature of plotting hyperspace routes and piloting the ship in general. His dislike of technology had driven him to the point where he depended on it, oddly enough. That was his downfall.

    The ship malfunctioned on entry into the atmosphere of the Outer Rim planet, a celestial body so far way from the Core that it wasn't on the majority of startcharts. The Zabrak had manually entered in the coordinates that he had managed to find in ancient texts. He hadn't done a good job of it. The ship did exactly what Deimos expected of it, and failed him utterly, crashing into the face of the planet and scarring the unknown forest. It was only the Force that saved the Knight, as he drew on his fear and surrounded himself in a protective bubble. Most of the shuttle was annihilated, leaving no hope of escape. And so the young Sith was stranded on a foreign world with only the voices in his head and the hostile wildlife to keep him company.

    ~~~~~~
    Years passed. At first the Zabrak gave himself over to his feral nature, bathing in his insanity and becoming little more than a animal bent on survival. His lightsaber served as one of the most deadly hunting weapons a creature could hope for, and he thrived.
    As time passed, however, Deimos began to emerge once more. There was something about the wild, untamed world that seemed to calm him. It wasn't the method that he had intended, but time and the uncivilized planet healed his mind. For the first time in a long time, Darth Ferus was able to think of himself as sane.
    ~~~~~~

    Fiery yellow eyes scanned the sky, squinting against the bright sun. There was something odd about today, and Deimos couldn't place it. He wasn't sure how long he had lived on the outermost fringes of the Galaxy, but today out of all of those days felt as though it held importance. He tried to use the Force to see what it was, what the day held for him, but he had never exactly mastered the use of Farsight. Shrugging, he returned to his daily activities.

    Deimos had fallen into a routine over the years. Mornings he ran from his little hut to the crash site a little more than a mile away to check on the short range distress signal he had set up. The ship had enough energy and spare parts that he was able to cobble something together, but the beacon wasn't stable. It required maintenance at least once a week. Then he would run through a light training regimen, honing his skills with the blade as best as he could without any sparring partners.

    He was midway through this exercise when he felt another ripple through the Force, drawing his eyes once more to the sky. Something is coming.

    -New Republic forces never really found themselves traveling this far from their space. Whether it was an adventure or a means of setting up a new base it didn't seem to matter. What mattered most was they were out here. The Azrael was the command class vessel that followed orders strictly under the High General of the NR. Many different types of ships sat aboard the Azrael, and there wasn't just a means of combat. Intel found themselves on board at times as well as political type persons. It seemed like a simple run through to check systems and practice flight patterns for those in the NR Navy. While at the same time; for those in the Army would prepare their gear for combat. This all included: blasters, armor, medical supplies, etc. etc. etc. At this point the Azrael wasn't at red alert status. Simply they were going through their routines.-

    -The bridge seemed to be the busiest. Scanners remained fixed for any pick ups whether they were friendly or not really depended. Even the smallest of traces wouldn't go unnoticed here. The High General wanted to ensure everyone was ready for any kind of battle situation. Today was just one of those days that seemed to be a little different in the eyes of the crew aboard the MC90 Star Cruiser.-

    -High General Tal Kote wasn't the formal type when it came to a military setting. Where many onboard the bridge of the Azrael would be wearing standard military issued uniforms; Kote would dress in the casual most attire. Did anyone complain? Maybe. Did the address it to their military leader? Not likely. Being mandalorian meant that some where afraid of a young 19-year-old High General. What was to be afraid? He was the youngest to receive the rank of High General in the New Republic. Many could vouch for his service record in the NR. Heck, even before joining the NR was an interesting story all together. So no one should be worried.... should they?-

      Anya knew making the transition from Empire to the Republic would see her starting her career over, and she wasn’t surprised to find herself working communications. It was a new ladder to climb. One she would do so with the utmost diligence. She sat at a row of consoles with several other communications officers, a single ear headset and boom microphone atop her head. Her hair was pulled back and wound into a tight bun, garments of a forest green color, standard issue for her station but comparable in fit and style to the black she wore in the Empire. “Medical, Engineering it sending one to you with mild thermal burns.” She could hear the girl next to her speak, managing to stay focused in spite of it with her assignments.

      “Understood Blue Leader. Gold Leader, Blue has transferred command of the Combat Air Patrol to you, happy flying.” Those working alongside of her had gotten used to the sound of her Imperial accent quickly, a pattern of speech she was unable to get rid of, and wouldn’t have done so even if she was able. It distinguished her though for her origins, of which she had become adept at ignoring. While she kept herself keyed into the Combat Air Patrol’s frequency, she knew it would only be needed in case of emergency and would not hinder any other communications. Otherwise she scanned frequencies, looking for anomalies or any specific instances that might demand attention.

      A warbling sound as she keyed over a frequency drew her back, rotating the knob left. It hissed and whined, the tell tale signs of a transmission though not a clear one. “Sir.” Her speech rolled at the end of the single word, glancing up towards her superior communications officer that monitored the station on the bridge. “I’ve detected an anomaly on one of the emergency frequencies. It’s nothing clear, but…” He stepped up, picking a headset up and plugging in to what she was listening to. “Sounds like nothing, Cadet. Maybe some interference.” He at first dismissed her suggestion, her form remaining straight while still looking up to him.

      “But it’s the emergency frequency. Isn’t any form of anomaly worth looking into?” His eyes tightened at the corners, and she regret briefly challenging his word so vocally. “Here sir, let me…” She pulled up the galactic mapping the sensor station had created of the sector they found themselves in. “…the planetary body here is classified as being habitable, though it’s not named on our starcharts.” Her index finger tapped against the small circle on the map. They locked eyes for a long moment, before he resigned himself to his duty and moved to inform the ship’s Commander of what was found.

        Deimos exploded into a burst of motion. He knew what he could feel, what he sensed through the Force. Somewhere, up in space above him, he could feel people. Living people, in a blasted metal tube. Under normal circumstances the young Sith wouldn't have been able to sense beings from such a great distance, but it had been years since he had been around living creatures with greater intelligence than a wild beast. The absence had left him overly sensitive to such things.

        The red-skinned man sprinted to his small hut, already mentally running through the list of items that he owned. He needed to be ready to leave now. There was no telling how long the ship would be around, and if they landed somewhere on the planet without discovering his distress signal then he needed to be headed for their landing site as soon as he could.

        Darth Ferus didn't own much nowadays. His traditional black robes had long since been ripped up and used for bandages, and he was now wearing an assortment of animal skins. There were a couple datapads that he was able to save from his ships wreckage which he quickly snatched up and shoved into a makeshift leather rucksack. A few tools that he used to maintain his robotic arm followed, as well as one of his old dueling knives. The other had long since broken. There was little else within the small shack that would prove useful to him once he was off this wild planet, and so he ran once more, headed back to the crash site.

        As he ran, Deimos began to formulate plans. It had been a long time since he had spoken to anyone, but he imagined that it wouldn't take much effort to convince anyone with half a heart to return him to civilized space. From there, he had contacts, people he knew that would return him to the Sith homeworld. And if the people on this ship weren't inclined to rescue him... Well, his lightsaber still worked, and he imagined that it couldn't be too hard to fly himself back.

          -Even some of the personal on the Azrael needed a talking to. His officers often times ignored what was happening on scanners and communications. Anything was worth looking into. Figuring out the communication pattern or even what the distress signal is all about. About the same time that Anya Sutherland had said something about the distress signal; the Azrael's commander had already tuned in. The blond haired man that was the High General stood by with both arms crossed over his chest. The communications officer seemed to ignore what Anya had said. Exhaling a breath of air; Tal decided it was his place to chime in on the situation.-

          "Isn't any anomaly worth looking into, Captain?" -Tal questioned to the communications officer. For a moment he seemed to remain quiet before the mandalorian's attention moved over to Anya.- "What do you think cadet? You said any anomaly is worth looking into; why not explain to me what you found?"

          -Tal wasn't the kind of man to let anything go. If anything he always wanted to look further into a situation whether it was a distress signal or an planet that looked habitable. He wanted the side to every story and was willing to go through measures to ensure that if it was either real or faulty.-

            The High General involved himself, the man who had handled her recruitment. At the time she hadn’t known who he was, but enough exposure to the New Republic Military had shed some light on that fact. He undoubtedly didn’t remember her, and she wouldn’t have blamed him. At her place, she was a face in a sea of faces, and a name amongst a large many. The concept didn’t offend her, because she knew she had to make her own way and no longer lean on the reputation of her mother.

            She unplugged her headset, allowing the speakers of her console to project the signal. “Nothing discernible. It’s an anomaly because this is not how dead air sounds. The whine you hear…” She paused, waiting. “…here, is congruent with another signal. It very well could be interference, and if it were anything but the emergency frequency it would have been easy to ignore. My thoughts are the planetary body in sector Kilo-19.” The two dimensional map allowed her to narrow the coordinates so much, rather than adding the third designation for ‘vertical’, as vertical as one could classify things in space.

            “It’s likely a short range distress single, and it’s either in disrepair or we are too far out from it’s transmission range.” She remained seated, her chair now turned towards the High General. Her hands rested in her lap, awaiting whatever call he would make on the matter. “I believe that the closer we get, the more intelligible the message will get. If it is operating off a loop, we will not be able to respond. If a team were to go to ground though, they might be able to triangulate a signal or ping it’s distance if the former is not a possibility for lack of manpower.” A triangulation would require more than just a single team, after all.

              A smart choice of words.

              -He really didn't expect that much coming from a new recruit just out of basic training. But first hand experience was always the best kind of experience. At leas that was how Tal viewed it. Even he himself received hands-on experience in the Army with the ranger unit. All of that experience helped him further reach his goals in becoming a member in the Special Forces unit. Kote was even involving himself more with the new republic navy. Understanding flight patterns and coming up with a strategy in case a fight broke out with an opposing force. Really, he wasn't at all disappointed in the response Anya gave him. More or less he was impressed to hear what a cadet had to say. After all it was the best way to travel through the ranks in the NR.-

              -Crossing his arms; he had a little time to think the situation through. They could either ignore it all together and make their way back to Telos or further investigate the signal. And if anyone knew the High General; he would want to further investigate the signal.-

              "A valid answer cadet," -Tal responded calmly.- "I believe it is in our best interest to further investigate this signal." -Turning around he walked to the center of the ship where a map was displayed. Placing his hands on it he activated it displaying their current location. Motioning for Anya took come up he turned toward her.- "Are you able to give us the location of which you received this signal?"

                The High General echoed her sentiments. While she wasn’t in command, she believed any return to home base to investigate a localized weak signal would be a waste, and just require a return trip. Rising when bid, she moved to the center of the bridge, navigating around the various other stations to the map projection he activated. The three dimensional display illuminated, bringing more depth than the simple ship born photographs taken by their sensors. She studied it a moment, looking for familiar star clusters to what she had noticed in her initial identification and relation.

                “Here sir.” She pointed to the location identified, her hand passing right through the holographic display to a specific location. “This is the only habitable planet in range of where the signal is originating. It is possible the ship is the space around it, and not actually on planet, but…” She considered a moment, not having enough details. “…we’ll know that quickly when we get close. If it is in orbit, broadcasting a repeating signal would drain on ships power systems. Life support, for example. If I were stranded in space, I would send a passive distress alert and only monitor the frequency when necessary out here.”

                She referred specifically to their relation to the Core. Finding a passing ship was unlikely, and whoever was the source of the transmission would need to revert to extreme resource conservation. “The planet is the most likely course.”

                  That or the ship could of crash landed on the planet.

                  -No matter what way one would put it; this was still a distress signal worth looking into. They had narrowed down their options to a single world from which the signal was originating. Best bet would be to arrive and send some troops down to investigate. Triangulate the signal and go from there. The main option was have a small team of troops armed wiith three, a field medic, and a good pilot to pilot the shuttle that would be traveling down. But first thing's first.... they had to get to the planet before doing any of this other stuff first. The High General had taken note in the location of the distress and turned to the navigator.-

                  "Set a course for...." -Tal paused for a moment looking back at the star map displaying the unknown planet.- "Kilo-19."

                  "Right away High General, sir." -The navigator responded.-

                  -Moving around a big ship like the Azrael was rather difficult. It was nothing like a standard X-Wing fighter. The engine size was much larger, came equipped with a hyperdrive system, life support, and a med bay. It was nothing like a standard NR shuttle. Battle ready and always prepared for combat when the time came.-

                  -Slowly the Azrael moved through space what seemed rather slow. In reality it was quick in speed. Everyone on board did their jobs just as they were trained. This gave the mandalorian High General some time to think a strategy through. Go over a game plan for dealing with the distress signal on this mysterious world. Easily he could send a small squad of Ghost's to check things out. Their training was passed that of the SpecForce; so Tal held complete faith in their abilities.-

                    The ship's inertial dampeners kept her from feeling the turn of the large craft, it being as neutral a feeling as standing on solid ground and a planet rotating on it's normal access while revolving around a sun or other planetary body. The High General set his course, and he part seemed finished. She turned and headed back to her station, slipping into the seat she held before and placing her headset back in it's rightful place.

                    She released a breath she hadn't realized she held for a few moments, considering the next move the crew of the Azrael would take. As the ship drew nearer and nearer to the planet, she continued to pluck at the frequency and study it. The distress signal was certainly on a loop, clogging the emergency frequency from allowing a reply, but ensuring the message was constantly delivered. She took a moment to study the iteration it was presently on with it's replay, then scrawled out the math on a sheet of paper.

                    Before she took her new findings to the High General, she decided to prepare a little extra. A pair of datapads were synced for communication, coupled with an embedding of the frequency the signal could be found on. When she had everything together, including a vague idea of the signals location, she rose and headed for the High General. "Forgive me, Sir. I know I wasn't asked to look into it any further, but I have this."

                    She set both datapads down on the console nearest him. "They have been preprogrammed in the event you do not bring a communications specialist groundside. They will talk to each other, and find the third point to help you triangulate. I've also narrowed the location down to the Southern Hemisphere on the Sun side of the planet. Their should be approximately 6.5 more hours of daylight, give or take variance for not knowing the location exactly."

                    She took a single step back, both her hands coming together at the small of her back with feet shoulder width apart. "One more thing. I didn't do the complete math, but this signal has been running for several years now, Sir. That might effect the parameters of the search." She paused, waiting, and added one last thing. "Is there anything more I can do, sir?" He had never asked her to do more in the first place, but any further circumstances were different.

                      -The mandalorian's eyes closed for a brief moment; the more he thought about the distress signal the more it bothered him. Not like that was a bad thing. Kote wasn't sitting on communication level to fully understand what was going on... or for that matter if this transmission was a never ending loop. Exhaling a breath of air his yellow eyes focused over to the cadet who approached him. Her skills of observation were quiet impressive. More impressive then those who sat down there. Guess it would be just one of those special skills. But none-the-less something had to be done. They were nearing the planet where the distress signal was coming from. From what Anya had said so far; sunset wasn't to far off.

                      "You did a great job, cadet." -Tal responded observing over the datapad she presented to him.- "That skill of yours is quiet unique. Observing that much in such a short amount of time."

                      -Looking from the window of the ship; the High General again observed the approaching planet. They weren't to far off for a shuttle to be sent down with a squad of troops to investigate. And Tal had already planned for the Ghost's to perform such a task. After all they were the equivalent to that of the SpecOps of the NR Intelligence.-

                      -Finally, after a while the mandalorian had come to a conclusion in the matter. Turning back over to Cadet Anya he offered a smile.- "Considering the fact that this emergency distress signal has been looping for years now is no coincidence, cadet. This has me to believe that someone is down there needing help. It is always the republic's best interest to aid those in need of help. Whether they are sick, injured, or dead. I initially planned for a quick specialized team to head down and investigate the situation. But those matters have changed." -Turning on his heals Kote prepared to leave the bridge motioning for Cadet Anya to follow.-

                        “Thank you Sir.” She said simply, though her mind contrived explanations. She opted not to seem so conceited and took the compliment as it was offered. The High General went on to explain his thought process, and leave a certain vagueness as to his plans. She turned and followed after him at his beckon. Her immediate opinion was that he was opting to take her down to the surface, which she believed would have been the intelligent move to ensure the signal was tracked and followed properly.

                        “We are leaving now then?” She boldly asked, noting the path they took through the belly of the bulbous MC-90, Azrael. She hadn’t the time to make it back to her quarters she assumed, so she hoped whatever shuttle they took would be appropriately stocked for supplies in the event something went wrong, like an ambush on the Azrael while they were ground side. Anya always attempted to mentally prepare for the worst case scenario, even if she didn’t voice her potential thoughts.

                          -The distance from the planet wasn't to far, but even a shuttle could easily make it planet side a little more faster. This aided in the event to track the signal and help anyone out that really needed the help. As they traveled down through the belly of the Azrael; several personal had stopped to salute the High General. Many seen it as a real honor to serve aboard the Azrael and follow under the High General's command. Though in rough times; there were only a select few of individuals who were able to see the entirety of the Azrael. Even during his early years in the NR Kote didn't know much about the Azrael or serving aboard it under the military leader. And though Tal was the youngest to become the military leader wasn't any huge accomplishment as some thought.-

                          "Yes we are," -Tal answered Anya's question.- "We will be heading planet side to investigate this signal and offer any help that maybe needed."

                          -Tal had already contacted the hanger of which ship to prepare and the units that would be traveling planet side. It had to be something that held use in fighting and medical treatment. When they finally entered the hanger there sat several personal preparing a Corellian gunship for take off. Tal thought it would be the most versatile ship to use. Supplies were being loaded on board while a group of four soldiers dressed in black style armor prepared themselves. This was the specialized unit that Tal was planing on taking down for investigating. Upon seeing the High General enter; one had shouted...-

                          "ATTENTION ON DECK! -Everyone in the hanger snapped to the position of attention.-

                          "At east," -Tal responded leading Anya to the group of four troops.- "Cadet Anya, I would like you to meet the unit that'll be traveling planet side with us today. They are formally called Ghost's nothing more nothing less. Each specialized in an area that will best help out in any kind of mission area."

                          -Not many people knew of the Ghost's and only a select few were allowed to join into their ranks. It was mainly a specialized unit of troops who followed under the High General's orders... only founded by the High General himself after being a member of the Devil Dogs. If one possessed enough skills and had a high enough recommendation; they would find themselves as members of this unit. They were small, and that was part of the reason why it was hard to be accepted. But during Tal's time with the Devil Dogs; he had found different members uses and abilities in combat which was part of the reason why he asked them to join. However, these members were different. Each member were as follows:

                          -Riley: bald-headed with half a mask and paint. Normally the heavy weapons expert
                          -Kaiser: hard military hat with goggles and a full mask. He was more speciaized in hacking and field medic work.
                          -Angel: a beanie and a mask; the marksman of the unit.
                          -Foxx: full mask and head gear. Most weapons he is skilled with.
                          (The photo helps too. Tal is the one out in front.)-

                            She followed the High General down to the Hangar Bay, where preparations were already being made. A specific quartet lingered together, checking their supplies and awaiting their arrival. It was one of the four that noticed Tal first, and called for attention across the entire deck. She refrained from the salute gesture, unnecessary since she had spent the better part of the day in his company to some extent. Instead when the introduction was given, she saluted the group. “A pleasure.”

                            The custom garb they wore emphasized an embracing of their title, as well as their individuality. It was very different then the Empire, that was certain, and she honestly wasn’t certain her preference. Every day had been pressed uniforms and polished boots, and it felt organized. The New Republic just felt different. A supply officer came up to her in that instant, handing her a pack. “All the standard communications equipment you may need, survival supplies, and…” He passed her a belt holster with a pistol and spare power pack. “..just in case.” Anya nodded, taking up the belt and clipping it around her waist before then throwing the pack over a single shoulder before she boarded the ship for departure.

                              -Tal had inclined for the members a part of his unit to introduce themselves. It was the way they were trained. Each had to act like a gentleman and show as much respect as they could. Whether it was aimed towards the Chief of State or a Prime Minister of another planet outside of the NR's jurisdiction. The planet they were traveling to was all different to them. Everyone needed to be prepared.... including the pilots. Everyone at least was required to carry a standard issued blaster pistol on their side just in case. Equipping his own custom special attire on; Kote turned accepting a blaster pistol that Foxx had handed to him.-

                              "Is everyone ready?" -Tal questioned; observing over his unit and the pilots accompanying them.-

                              "Yes sir; everything is ready." -Spoke the dark husky voice of Riley.-

                              -With a nod of approval; Tal glanced over to Anya. She didn't have the special kind of equipment that the Ghost's were equipped with. But at least she had the kind of equipment that would help out on this mission. Everyone in the unit would offer her as much protection as possible while searching for this distress signal. But it also didn't hurt to be prepared.-
