    The Speed of Darkness (Talus)

DarkStar entered the training ground which he had ordered set up differently, at least in part. A four hundred metre track had been laid out as per the Sith Lord's instuctions.

DarkStar inspected it, making sure there was no bumps or holes. That done he checked the other equipment he had requested. Normally he didn't do this, but he could sense Talus had the potential to learn to move like the ancient Sith.

It had taken the Force Vampyre decades of battles to hone his reactions to boarder on precognition, even without the Force. He check the droids had brought in the ysalimiri, they were far enough away that they wouldn't cause any problems but close enough that DarkStar could get them easily when he wanted them for the training.

When he was sure anything was read he called out to his apprentice, Talus through the Force, the message was simple, direct and booked no arguments.

    Join me

Unless he was eating, sleeping, or reading Talus was never far from the training grounds. He solitary exercise he could engage himself in there, he also loved to hear the war cries of his fellow Sith as they honed their skills. As part of his genetic makeup, Talus was given an affinity for combat and physical exercise and enjoyed being active. This also allowed him to keep his body in peak physical condition, a prerequisite for a Sith in training. As he went through the warm-up motions of the ancient martial art he practiced, Sabat, he felt a message from his master, simple and direct; "Join me."

Talus smiled he enjoyed his training with Lord Darkstar, it was always a hopeless fight against him and Talus enjoyed those, for it is in a hopeless battle that Men know from what mold they came.

Talus began to jog towards the area that his master had designated for them. As he entered he immediately spotted his master, standing in the middle of a track seemingly inspecting things. He approached him, Talus was wearing a training gi, and had his shortened dreadlocks tied behind his head loosely. He nodded towards his master and spoke reverantly; "You called, m'lord?"

DarkStar turned to Talus as he arrived and inclinded his head in greating.

"We are here my young apprentice to hone your speed and reactions, I am correct in believeing you will live longer than a normal human am i not?"

DarkStar stepped off the track and picked up a timekeeper, he motioned Talus onto the starting blocks.

"This a 400 metre track, I expect you to run the first circuit in 60 seconds or less, the second in 50 or less and the third in 40 or less. This should be a simple task. Do it,"

DarkStar clicked the start button on the timekeeper.

Posted by Talus Invictus on 09-09-2002 08:32 AM:

Talus nodded in the affimative to both, he would live much longer than the average human and that he understood the task his master had for him.

He had already been jogging so luckily his body was warmed up. He ran the first lap in under 50 seconds without breaking a sweat, smiling he began to increase his speed second lap, 44 seconds flat, he was beginning to hit stride as he hit his third lap. He could keep track of his time in his mind, he rounded the 3 corner with only 100 meters left and it had taken him 25 seconds thus far, he poured it on his feet becoming a blur even with his long gaping strides. He crossed the finish line, by his time 34 1/2 seconds but that wasn't the time that mattered. It was the time on his master's watch.

Posted by Drako on 09-12-2002 01:56 PM:

DarkStar stopped the watch and looked at the results, he set the watch down. They were good enough. He picked three score daggers off the table and looked over to Talus.

"I'm going to throw these at you, I want you to catch each one and drive it down into the ground,"

DarkStar began throwing the daggers slowly, one after another at Talus, each dagger slightly sooner than the one before until the last few were thrown at blistering speed.

Posted by Talus Invictus on 09-12-2002 02:21 PM:

Talus' watched the first dagger come at him, with out the force he was still able to catch it, without hesitating he threw it directly into the ground, the blade burrowing itself hilt deep in the sod. He didn't have to use the force for the first score of daggers, his genetically altered senses gave him 20/10 vision, which meant he could pick up the design on the handle of each of the first 20 daggers as they moved rapidly towards him. Each was immediately tossed into the ground, with out Talus giving it a second thought, although he had to begin using 2 hands after dagger number 16.

The next score required him to increase his already enhanced senses and hand eye co-ordination with the force, he was able to catch the daggers and throw them into the ground and get his hand up just as the next one was arriving. By the end of the second score the daggers were becoming slightly blurry to the young Sith Disciple. He continued using the force until the 50th dagger when he realized that he was going to have to catch multiple daggers and then use the force to slow down the last few.

As the daggers began approaching him at unbelievable speeds, Talus began backing up giving himself more time between each dagger, tossing them into the ground. When dagger number 56 came at him he caught it and held it, he caught 57 in his left, then 58 in his right then 59 in his left, by the time he caught 59, the final dagger was a foot from his chest. Focusing everything he had learned about the force, he slowed the dagger immensely and jumped a good 3 feet back tossing the other 4 daggers directly into the sod at the same time. Even that was almost not enought time to stop the last dagger, as he focused in on it, there was six inches between the tip and Talus breast when both palms came together to stop the blade, the tip resting less than an inch from his mail shirt. He spun the dagger in his hands and dropped to his knees triuphantly plunging the final dagger into the ground.

"Is that acceptable m'lord," Talus asked as he lept back to his feet, looking infront of him, he saw 60 dagger hilts sticking out of the ground like budding plants.

    DarkStar shrugged non-comitally

"It will do, for now, you will have to be faster though,"

DarkStar looked down at the table and smiled again, taking a small spherical object from the table.

"This next test is...possibly fatal if you mess up, this is a Death Sphere, random lightsabre blades with imurge from it, as it spins and moves randomly. Dodgy it, if you can, if you can't, be prepared to die."

DarkStar threw the sphere at Talus and it began to activate.

Posted by Talus Invictus on 09-15-2002 03:51 PM:

Talus watched the tragectory of the ball as it arced it's way towards him. Let's do this... He grinned as the first saber ignited and slashed at him, he ducked quickly and stepped hard to the right. As he began to straighten up the ball attacked again this time the saber ignited low and swung up at Talus. Talus spun to his left and heard the snap hiss of another saber come to life, he ducked low as the blade hissed over head.

It's getting faster and more precise. The hairs on the back of Talus' neck stood up, he had spun to face the sphere so he could see it attack and another light saber was thrusted at him. Talus lept back quickly.

I didn't hear or see anything that time and I still felt it coming... Talus grinned, as the sphere slashed at him again, he arced back as the blade went over him, then dropped his right foot back and swiveld to his left as a blade came straight up and passed directly infront of him.

Duck, step left, jump, spin right, back hard... These series of thoughts happened in the instant that the ball lashed out at him more desperately. His movements were becoming fluid, instinctive, not desperate and last second, Talus seemed to be dodging the sphere's attack 2 moves ahead. His movements were slowly becoming blurry. He was becoming faster by the second. The sphere was emitting a new saber almost immediately after the last one died out and yet Talus did not seemed suprised or caught off guard by it. He already looked faster than he had shown in the knife drill.

Finally, the sphere went into an all out assult, like the last desperate flares of a dying flame.

    This is it...

Talus lept backward, did an aerial flip to his left, spun to his right arched backwards.dropped and rolled to his right, kipped up and slid left a step and then he planted, he simply began moving his torso avoiding the ball, this continued for nearly 5 seconds with 8 lashes of the light sabers when suddenly the ball deactivated and fell lifelessly to the ground.

How the hell did I do that? Talus took a deep breath and picked up the sphere and carried it back to his master.

Posted by Drako on 09-18-2002 04:48 AM:

DarKStar watched, silent, approving, Talus's natural abilities were good, but they were no where near close to how good DarkStar intended to make them.

He held out his hand, the daggers returned to the table, all nicely lined up, DarkStar was something of a perfectionist when he had the time to be.

"Now, you will run the track again, and again and again, you will continue to run it till your breathing is ragged and sweat pours from you, then we will do the dagger exersise again,"

The idea was to make Talus work, when he was tired it would take more effort to complete the exercise, the more effort it took, the more his reactions would ajust, the faster he would become.

Posted by Talus Invictus on 09-18-2002 09:16 AM:

Talus nodded as he began to sprint the track. He knew that it would take quite a few laps to run him ragged. For one he was genetically engineered for endurance. He had in the past ran well over 10k at near sprint speed and been able to work out afterwards.

As he ran the kilometers began to rack up, 3k,5k,7k, Talus was in a dead sprint as he rounded the final straight away for 10k, he'd never ran this hard or fast in his life. As he completed the lap his chest was heaving and the sweat poured off him like a Kaminoan downpour. He ran 4 more laps before he could go no more and still be standing.

Turning towards his master he placed his hands on top of his heaad catching his breath and awaited the onslaught of daggers to begin.

Posted by Drako on 09-23-2002 01:43 PM:

This time there was no warm up, the daggers came thick and fast, and Talus had two options, block them or die and DarkStar seemed determined to make the latter the case.

Posted by Talus Invictus on 09-23-2002 03:59 PM:

Talus saw the first few daggers coming straight for him, he moved quickly, quicker than he had the first time and began snatching them out of the air and throwing them to the ground, but it seemed that there were just too many of them.

I won't be beaten Talus thought to himself and began drawing from his ambition to fuel the force within him. He started moving even faster, but he was still having to back up with each dagger he caught.

24, 25, 26.... He wasn't even halfway through and the daggers were catching up to him. He reached up to catch the 34th dagger when suddenly he felt a pain in his hand, he had grabbed it by the blade. Suddenly there was a fire lit inside him. Everything seemed to slow down, his vision becamed tunnelled. He could only see Lord Darkstar and the incoming daggers, but the daggers seemed to be suspened in mid air. Talus began walking towards the blades that were slowly floating towards him picking each one out of the sky and kneeling to the ground and placing the blades in it.

To anyone else though, the scene being played out was much different, Talus had suddenly broken some form of barrier that had held him back and was moving at incredible speeds that belied his rank of Disciple.

Posted by Drako on 10-18-2002 12:05 PM:

With a snap of his fingers DarkStar recalled the knives and summoned a droid to bring across the ysalimiri. He smiled wickedly.

"Now, again, but this time, the Force you will be denied,"

DarkStar waited till he felt himself stripped of the Force then began the visicous knife onslaught on the tiring Disciple.

Posted by Talus Invictus on 10-18-2002 01:16 PM:

Gone... the constant buzz that he felt, the heightening of his senses, the feeling of what was going to happen a split second before it did, gone. Nothing but reality now, Talus felt sluggish, his physical limits were now being shown, since he did not have the force to feed off of, he was simply a man, albeit a genetically enhanced man, who was still much quicker and stronger than others, but a man none the less.

Talus' eyes grew wide as the knives began flying at him again, Darkstar's abilities didn't seem lessened by the loss of the force, but Talus' were definately. The first dagger approached with incredible speed, Talus enhanced eye sight could barely trace the trajectory. His hand shot up at the last possible second, saving his chest from the metal emmisary of death.

The second dagger approached with even more velocity than the first, Talus sidestepped and snatched out at it, as he caught the dagger he drove the first one in the ground, and sidestepped left to avoid the third. Barely grasping the handle he drove the second dagger into the ground, as he felt the sting of the forth biting into his left shoulder. He moved just enough that it didn't do anything but cut the skin and he caught it as it fell to the ground.

Pain... It has been so long since I've felt it so pure... unbridled, I do not like this sensation one bit...

Talus winced as he focused in on the next dagger...

Posted by Drako on 10-27-2002 01:07 AM:

DarkStar hovered, unsure wether to throw the next knife or not, after a moment or two he powered it into the ground instead.

DarkStar said, igniting Widowmaker and threw Talus a training sabre, moving away from the table he stepped into a defencive stance.

"Lets see how good your sabre skills are without the Force, I trust I will not be disappointed,"

Posted by Talus Invictus on 10-27-2002 08:15 AM:

The beautiful sound of death, igniting ready to taste flesh. Talus grinned at his master as he looked up.

"I aim to please m'lord..." He moved quickly at his master, he knew that the force vampyre would be much quicker and stronger because of his genetics and years of training, but Talus did not care, it was time to see just how well he was built.

Completely under control with his attack he brought his saber down at an angle from his left towards his right, spinning with his blade to make a counterstrike all the more difficult.

Posted by Drako on 11-01-2002 03:31 PM:

DarkStar didn't attempt to block the strike, he simply moved out of the way, sideways into Talus's blind spot where the sabre hid him as he moved.

Attacking as he moved DarkStar kicked Talus in the ribs, even without the Force DarkStar was incredibly strong, strong enough to break two of Talus;s ribs with that single strike before he spun away to assume his defencive stance again.

Posted by Talus Invictus on 11-01-2002 05:10 PM:

Talus grunted, dropped to one knee as the bones cracked in his ribs.

"Ummph.." Rising to his feet he came at his master again, there was no chance of his victory or even striking his opponent, unless his master allowed it, but it wasn't the victory over an opponent that mattered, it was fighting no matter the odds that mattered, it's what made him a man, made him stronger.

This time he came after his master much more deliberately. Moving slowly until he was in range to strike. His dragon saber hissed through the air as he brought it horizontally towards his side. As he struck he slipped to the ground, driving his foot at his master's knee.

Posted by Drako on 11-14-2002 03:02 PM:

The ancient Sith's leg came up, parrying Talus's with a thud even as their sabre's clashed. Drako's leg came over, using Talus's as a pivot he flicked upself up, driving his other leg into his apprentice's midrif.

Posted by Talus Invictus on 11-14-2002 06:54 PM:

Talus wheezed as the air was driven from his lungs for a moment, but that did not stop him from clenching his master's leg tightly. Taking a deep breath he rolled, still holding on to Drako's leg, in the hopes that he would wrench it out of socket.

Posted by Drako on 12-05-2002 03:27 PM:

Drako let himself be pulled towards his apprentice rather than allowing his leg to be renched out. He fell towards Talus, bending his knee to drive it into the disciple's upper chest.

Posted by Talus Invictus on 12-05-2002 08:59 PM:

The knee never hit Talus' chest instead it hit his shoulder as Talus rolled away. The blow to his shoulder stunned the nerves but Talus still latched to his master's leg wipped him to the ground.

He released his master's leg and scrambled to his feet. He gripped his saber and came after Drako's prone back as he ignited the blade.

Snap-hisss.... Was the only sound as the blade ripped to life, then the scream of an extended saber blade as it came down at it's target.

Posted by Drako on 12-18-2002 02:20 PM:

Drako's boots planted themselves in Talus's chest as he tried to bring the sabre down, launching the apprentice backwards. Flipping back to his feet the Sith Master reingited his sabre and advanced.

Posted by Talus Invictus on 12-20-2002 01:39 PM:

Talus hit the ground hard and rolled backwards, somehow ending up on his feet. He grimaced, the shock of the blow had cracked a rib.

Quickly he came back at his master, who was advancing on him. Thier sabers clashed, sparks flew as the blades arced in the night. The two columns of fire roaring from the dragon headed sabers, crackled and roared as they seared through the atmosphere and crashed together.

"Master, is what we do outside the force, amplied equally when we regain our ability to use it?" Talus decided to recieve a lesson as he dueled with his master.

Posted by Drako on 01-11-2003 03:42 PM:

Drako nodded as he began to bear his apprentice backwards,

"Yes, the point of this exercise is to increase your basic speed levels, the Force increases your speed by a factor, therefore the more you increase your basic speed the more the Force will enhance your speed."

Drako pushed him another step backwards

"Also the techniques learnt here can be applied within the Force but also remember there may be times when you have to fight without the Force, so learn these lessons well and practise with them often,"

Posted by Talus Invictus on 01-11-2003 03:49 PM:

Talus continued to back up, his master's strength and speed was infinite times greater than his, even without the force. Talus was losing too much ground he needed to gain some kind of momentum. He increased the aggression of his counter-attacks, trying to press his master back. All it did was slow his advance slightly.

"So as my body increases in strenth and speed, the force amplifies that as well. So is there a way to increase the factor by which the force affects you or does one just further master their control over it?"

As their blades met, showering the area with sparks, Talus pushed his master's saber up and attempted to kick him in the stomach.

Posted by Drako on 01-11-2003 04:18 PM:

Drako parried with his own leg, driving Talus's kick aside as he bore the sabres down again, his voice never faltering as he adressed his apprentice's question.

"As your control over the Force increases, as you gain power within the Force the factor of increase in itself increases,"

Drako flicked his leg to the other side of Talus's, wrapping it round in an attempt to bring his apprentice down.

"You will understand as your dark journey continues and your understanding of the Force deepens, but for this day, i believe your journey is over,"

With a sudden exertion of his cord like muscles Drako flicked over, sending Talus crashing down as he was over balanced, the Sith Master's knee came down onto his chest and Widowmaker was close enough against his neck that he could feel the heat.

Posted by Talus Invictus on 01-11-2003 04:34 PM:

Talus felt his body pitch forward then the sudden and crushing weight of his master coming down on his chest. He lost his grip on his saber, cursing himself for it, since he could not call for it with the force.

Feeling the heat of the saber against his neck, Talus decided his best option in the fight would be to defer to another time.

"As you wish master," His deep voice replied.
