  • Nature with a Naturalist [Nafrayo]

Dressing warmly, Masiri glanced around her room to ensure that she hadn't forgotten anything. The private message sent to the higher ranked Jedi had stated that she would need to come out into the wilderness for today's lesson. Slipping on her gloves, the padawan felt like a little kid again, her mother dressing her and her sister for time outside in the snow. She could almost smell her mother's perfume as the memories came flooding back, prompting a sigh. Clearing her throat, she turned and headed for the door, her brown robe now over her shoulders. Though the open door, she continued on through the temple and out of the main entrance, the scenery here always breathtaking.

Crunching through the snow, she took her time knowing that she had purposely left early for the trek through the snowy fields and into the forest to find Nafrayo. Having seen the alien around the temple all the time, she had also heard many of the other padawans talk about him. Glistening, the untouched carpet of white was picturesque and she hated to disturb it, but continued on knowing she was running out of time. Brown eyes scanned over the quiet terrain as sunlight pierced through occasional breaks in the clouds, giving life to the flora and fauna on the moon.

Soon, the view was masked by tall trees, their boughs now heavier with the added pillowy weights suspended on the branches and gripped to the trunks. Letting the Force guide her to the Jedi, she soon noticed his aura and continued on until reaching the small clearing.

It wasn´t a secret the Neti Guardian spent quite some time outside and within the vast forest near the Jedi temple. It was not always easy to find him, especially when he resumed his more natural form of a tree. And at times, Nafrayo deliberately used his abilities in the Force as well to remain hidden. But today, he didn´t make it more difficult and challenging for the young Padawan, who´d requested a lesson, to find him. After heavy snowfall the past night, the forest was covered by a thick white blanket. Standing in the center of a clearing, Nafrayo faced the first light of the day, which didn´t increase the frigid temperature at all. But it nourished the tree-like being still.

Nafrayo had been there already an hour earlier, seemingly unaffected by the freezing temperatures. The Guardian meditated quietly in the light, waiting patiently for the young Padawan to arrive. Even if a student was running late, he was the last to reprimand them for it, as hours and minutes were of little importance to the Guardian himself. Soon, he picked up the presence of Masiri wandering towards him. Standing an imposing 2.6 meters tall and dressed in green Jedi robes, Nafrayo kept a humanoid shape most of the time, looking like an odd tree person. When the young woman entered the clearing, Nafrayo turned to face her, nodding at Masiri.

"Good morning, Padawan Masiri. How are you doing on such a bright and beautiful day?", he greeted her, speaking in a soft and gentle tone, green eyes looking at her curiously. Though Nafrayo knew many of his fellow Jedi, he hadn´t met her in person yet. At least not that he remembered...

Turning her attention to the large alien Jedi, Masiri bowed to him and grinned. "Doing well, thank you," her breath drifting out in wisps as local avians' song echoed through the forest. She refrained from inquiring more about him though her interest was indeed piqued seeing him in his natural element. "I received your message on the com and wanted to come out earlier, just took some time to find my gloves," she grinned apologetically.

"Well, I hope the temperature isn´t too uncomfortable...", Nafrayo said to Masiri. People were often more profoundly affected by the cold, though a Jedi had to learn how to deal with different enviroments and less comfortable conditions. So it´s been for more than one reason the Neti had wanted to teach the Padawan outside. His own robes didn´t provide much insulation, but Nafrayo was used to the cold by now, though his original home had been a humid and warm jungle world.

"Do you have any questions, or shall we begin?"

"Nah, I've endured worse," she stated, keeping her emotions in check as they had been the only things keeping her up nights before training with Amalia. She had learned a lot since coming here and was eager to strengthen herself against the evil things lurking in the shadows of her mind. Memories that weren't easily defeated, it seemed. Pondering any questions prior to beginning, she shook her head and shrugged. "Can't think of anything."

Unsure if she was supposed to have read up on this element and others, Masiri didn't remember anything specific in his note on the com station prior to leaving.

"Very well. So... you wish to learn about the elements...", Nafrayo said, nodding at the young woman. Though he was curious as to why she wanted to learn that kind of skill, he wasn´t going to ask. Any student who wanted to focus on the elemental manifestations of the Force was welcome to do so. To the Neti, it simply was a way to connect even more to nature and all living things.

"Close your eyes and feel the breeze on your face... be aware of it. Feel your breath going in and out. Reach out to the air surrounding your body. Try to push gently, through the Force, and create a soft breeze. It may take a while, so you need to be patient..."
            , he advised her.

His initial comment made her curious as to this alien whom she had never been around before. Her parents had always told the twins that the galaxy was full of unique and amazing things and she was now in the presence of one and had a hard time not admiring the humanoid tree. When he instructed her on opening herself to the Force, she immediately did so, closing her eyes and opening herself to the universal energies flowing around them and through them. Her own touch to the Force had been one that took time to be comfortable around, especially with how she and her sister had been tortured by it for so long.

The quiet breath of life that flowed around her calmed the usually tentative padawan as she pondered his words and then attempted it for the first time. She had never considered that their touch with the Force would allow them to manipulate the elements before, but Amalia had taught her that anything was possible, just be careful what you did with it. It took the seventeen year old some time to focus enough on the very molecules that bounced and flowed before her mind's eye, though she also knew that having that sight allowed her to touch them. Using her mental hand, she posed the question to the Force and allowed it to guide her to accomplish the task. Taking some time to get all those things in motion, she soon noticed a ripple in the natural flow. Curious now, she tried it again and this time opened herself up even more to the thought of moving the air, noticing again a ripple, though much more pronounced.

Opening her eyes, she had no idea how long that had taken and could almost picture her master for today asleep. Glancing up to him, she took a deep breath and eased her mind. "That's interesting actually. I can imagine there would be the wrong things do to with such an ability, but also some good things," she posed as more of a question.

Nafrayo observed the Padawan´s progress in the Force. Reaching out and manipulating the molecules wasn´t easy, but being able to sense and see them was a first step and a good start. The young girl seemed to get a hang of this more easily and quickly than the Guardian had, when he´d been taught this for the first time. Though it took quite a while, Masiri found Nafrayo watching her curiously with his gentle, green eyes. Even if it would´ve taken several hours, the Guardian would´ve remained patient. Time meant little for a being such as him. He wasn´t in a rush, neither was she...

                "Well done, young Padawan"
, he said to Masiri with a smile on his face. He reached out a hand in front of her, palm facing up, when she asked about the good and bad things one could do with such a skill. A bit of concentration, and after a few moments the air above the Neti´s palm began to twirl around, creating a tiny whirlwind to raise some snowflakes. It was the very miniature of what, on a much larger scale, could become a devastating tornado. Though this one was harmless and Masiri would need much more training and years of practice to do a similar thing. It was but a demonstration.

"The Force can be used in many different ways... and it is entirely up to the one in control if lifes are saved or destroyed...", he explained to her, speaking softly, still smiling, as the little whirlwind soon dissappeared.

"All of the elements are very powerful. They can destroy and kill... Think of heavy storms or a tsunami. But... could you think of some good ways to use the element air?"

She watched with rapt attention as he demonstrated one aspect of the ability that would no doubt come after a long time practising the skill. The miniature whirlwind could one day become a terrible storm and something that she couldn't imagine a good purpose for at this point. His query took her a little time to answer as she thought long and hard.

"Hmm," her lips pursed. "Maybe keeping someone from falling over a cliff or from a high place, blowing them back over onto a patio or roof, maybe." Slender forefinger went to her lips. "I think it's like you said, the situation would have to be weighed when it arose," she shrugged, not having many more ideas off the top of her head.

"That could work, though you can also catch that person, too... More ideas?", Nafrayo asked. "How about toxic gases leaking from a demaged pipeline, for instance. If you use air, you could blow it away before it could harm people, who would otherwise be exposed to it it..." The Neti knew there were many useful applications of controlling the air around them. Even in battle it could be of use...

"Air could provide cooling, it can even dry your clothes if the´d become soaked..."
, he added. Though a Jedi rarely used the Force for such mundane tasks, it could be vital do do so. For in a cold enviroment such as this, wet clothes could be very dangerous to warm-blooded beings such as Masiri. Looking up to the other trees nearby, he raised a hand to blow some of the snow off their branches.

"Now, would you like to try it again? Or having further questions?"
                    , the Neti asked gently.

The added thoughts on how to use the ability were ones that could have come to her at some point, but it was definitely good to expand her mind now before going into the next mission. It seemed strange to her to be utilizing the elements, though the more she thought about it the more useful they could be, if used in the right context. However, she had to keep in mind that the ends didn't justify the means either.

"I'll be practicing this one for a while," she turned toward the large alien whose kind face seemed rather inviting. "How have you used it?"

"Practice is important... you should do that often", the Neti recommended, ever watching the young human girl, who was hardly more than a child in his eyes. "Used... well, I haven´t called upon this element all too often in my journeys. For the most part, it was also practice. Actually, I tend to work with water more often. It helps a lot when tending to the temple garden...", he answered her question with a wink. "I simply focus on the elements around me, watching, learning, without necessarily manipulating them... it is comforting to feel their presence directly." He turned around and walked a few steps through the forest, before facing Masiri once again. His smile turned into a grin, feelings of comfort and contentment radiating from the Guardian. To be outside the temple, surrounded by nature, and connecting to it in his own special way tended to be different to how most humanoids perceived such a place.

"Meditate. Feel. Be aware... the wind, the water, even fire... it allows for life to flourish. The Force flows through everything... The elements are part of it, as is everything else."

Nafrayo wasn´t sure she shared his hapiness and enthusiasm as much when it came to things like this. But he didn´t care. This was just the way he was...

Bowing to the Guardian respectfully, Masiri grinned. "Thank you for today." She only hoped that this ability might perhaps help her reclaim her twin which was still missing. Though her recent trip to Nar Shaddaa with her master had gotten a lead, Lurianna continued to elude the Jedi. Leaving the Neti to nature, she turned and headed back through the picturesque scenery, her boots crunching through the snow as she retraced her steps to the temple.

The gentle Neti returned the bow, still smiling, as he watched Masiri leave. She definetely displayed little interest in sharing the experience of the elements with Nafrayo. He wasn´t offended, not at all. People had their own ways, their own priorities.

"You are welcome... may the Force always be with you...", the Guardian whispered gently. He wasn´t sure whether or not she´d heard his parting words. Nafrayo just hoped that Masiri would stay safe and that the element of air would eventually offer a chance to help the girl.
